Awario vs Syften for developer communities, plus a third option

Syften covers Hacker News and GitHub with webhooks; Awario keeps its API on Enterprise. AyeWatch adds page alerts and an API from $9.

Developer tools get discussed in places that brand monitoring was never designed for: Hacker News threads, GitHub issues, subreddits, Stack Overflow, the odd Mastodon post. If you ship a library, a CLI or a dev product, the Awario vs Syften question comes down to where your users talk and what you plan to do with what they say. This comparison covers both, then a third tool that handles the parts neither does well.

The short version

Awario is a general social listening platform with Boolean search, sentiment and reports. Syften is a keyword alert service built around online communities, with fast Reddit and Hacker News coverage. For a developer product, Syften is usually the better of the two. AyeWatch is the better pick than either if you also care about web pages and want fewer false matches without maintaining keyword lists.

Coverage

Awario Syften
Main sources Social media, news, blogs, videos, forums, reviews Reddit, Hacker News, Indie Hackers, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Bluesky, Mastodon, Slack communities, Lobste.rs, Dev.to, podcasts, blogs
X and YouTube Included in social coverage Paid add-ons: X +$40/mo, YouTube +$20/mo
Reddit speed Not stated Target delay under a minute

Syften's source list reads like a map of where developers hang out. Awario's reads like a map of where consumers do. Both are built to find mentions, not to tell you when a specific page changes, such as a competitor's changelog or a docs page.

Matching and noise

Both tools match on keywords. Awario gives you Boolean search with unlimited keywords per topic, which is powerful but needs ongoing tuning when your project name is also a common word. Syften keeps you in control of the filters and adds AI filtering of noisy matches on higher plans.

For a project called something like "Atlas" or "Pulse", either tool will need careful exclusions.

Delivery and integration

Awario Syften
Slack Yes, notifications per alert Yes
Webhooks Not listed on the pricing page Yes
API Enterprise plan only Yes
RSS Not listed Yes
Data export Pro and Enterprise Via API

For developers, this table decides it. Awario's API sits on its Enterprise plan, which costs $249 a month billed yearly. Syften offers API, RSS and webhook delivery for routing alerts into your own tools.

Price

  • Awario: Starter $29 a month yearly ($49 monthly), 3 topics, one user, no API or export. Pro $89 a month yearly, 15 topics, 10 users. Enterprise $249 a month yearly, 100 topics, API.
  • Syften: $29.95 a month entry, then $49.95 and $119.95. 14-day trial, no card.

Verdict on the two

Pick Syften over Awario for a developer product. Pick Awario only if you also need sentiment charts and PDF reports for a marketing team.

The third option: AyeWatch

AyeWatch approaches the problem from a different side. Instead of a keyword list, each monitor has a rule in plain English, and posts are judged by what they mean. "Threads where someone compares our CLI with a named rival, or reports an install error" is a valid rule, and a post about Atlas the mythological figure will not match it.

What makes it fit a dev team:

  • Pages as well as posts. Paste a URL, such as a rival's pricing page or release notes, and get alerted when a meaningful detail changes.
  • Summaries, not snippets. Each alert says what was posted or what changed and why it matched, with links, so a maintainer can triage it in seconds.
  • Social sources. Subreddits and Reddit users, X profiles and searches, YouTube channels, LinkedIn posts, Instagram and TikTok, plus news and the wider web.
  • API on every paid plan. Create, list, update and delete topics over REST, receive signed topic.update webhooks (HMAC-SHA256) with AI summaries, and connect an assistant through the MCP server at https://ayewatch.ai/api/mcp.
  • Price. Paid plans start at $9 a month, and the Free Preview gives three runs with no card.

When the others still win

If you need sub-minute Reddit and Hacker News alerts for lead hunting, Syften is built for exactly that. If a marketing lead wants weekly sentiment reports, Awario is the cheap way to get them. AyeWatch does not produce sentiment charts.

If you want one account for community mentions and the pages your competitors publish, wired into your own stack through an API, start with AyeWatch's free preview.
