Claude Code pricing starts at $20 a month on Claude Pro, or $17 a month if you pay for a year, and the same tool comes with Max at $100, Ultra at $200, and every Team and Enterprise seat. If you would rather not subscribe, an Anthropic Console account bills Claude Code per token instead, while the free Claude plan leaves it out entirely.
Every price below comes from Anthropic's pricing page and its help center, checked on November 3, 2026. Prices exclude tax, and Anthropic says it can change them at any time.

Max 20x is now Ultra
Guides written before November, UsageAtlas's own October cost guide among them, list a "Max 20x" plan at $200. Anthropic has since renamed it Ultra. Subscribers moved across at the same price, and the limit is now counted per week at ten times Pro, with no five-hour cap for verified accounts. Max is now a single tier at $100.
Which plan fits your week
- Pro suits you if limit messages are rare. It is the cheapest way to use Claude Code on a schedule.
- Max is the next step when Pro's weekly limit stops you most weeks.
- Ultra helps when long agent runs keep stalling at the five-hour mark.
- Console billing fits uneven use. A quiet month costs little. A heavy one can cost more than any plan, so set a workspace spend limit.
Claude Code shares one pool with Claude chat on every plan, so heavy chat use eats into your coding time too.
Three billing details people miss
An API key in your shell overrides the plan. Anthropic's help center warns that when ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, Claude Code authenticates with that key and bills per token, even if you pay for Pro or Max.
The API credits on Max and Ultra are not for Claude Code. Max includes $100 a month and Ultra $200 a month in credits for building on the Claude Platform. Anthropic says they can't pay for Claude Code or the Claude apps.
Usage credits are a separate charge. Past a limit, paid plans can keep going at standard API rates. Those charges sit on top of the subscription, capped by a monthly limit you choose.
Price your own usage before you pick
A price table cannot tell you which plan your work needs. Claude Code's /usage screen shows the current session and your plan bars, but the cost line there is an API-rate estimate, and Claude Code deletes local session files after 30 days by default.
UsageAtlas fills that gap. It is a free, open-source desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that reads Claude Code's local logs and your signed-in plan, then shows:
- the five-hour and weekly windows with their reset times
- tokens by model, day and project
- an estimated cost at list prices
- history that stays after Claude Code clears its files
It needs no account for local tracking and does not read prompts or responses. Its dollar figures are estimates, so Anthropic's invoice remains the record.
With a month of history the choice gets simple. If your estimated API cost stays well under $20, paying per token may be cheaper than Pro. If you hit the weekly limit most weeks, look at Max.
When you need something else
If your company buys Claude Team or Enterprise, the admin spend report is the place for organization-wide numbers. UsageAtlas covers your own machine.
