Cursor vs Claude Code is less a race between two equal products than a choice between an AI editor and an AI agent, each with its own meter. Cursor bills a weekly pool for its own models and charges Claude models at API list price from prepaid credit, while Claude Code runs on a flat Claude plan with five-hour and weekly limits. If most of your work runs on Claude models, Claude Code on a Claude plan usually goes further for the money, and UsageAtlas, a free desktop tracker, shows both meters on one screen so you can confirm it on your own work.
Prices below come from each vendor's pricing page as of November 2026. Both companies change plans often.
An editor and an agent
Cursor is a code editor first. You type, accept completions, and hand larger jobs to its Agent, its terminal CLI or Cloud Agents. Its own models, Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5, draw from your plan's pool. It also offers models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others.
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It reads the codebase, edits files and runs commands, and you reach it from a terminal, an IDE extension, a desktop app or the web. It runs Anthropic's models only.
So the real question is often how you like to work. Some people want suggestions while they type. Others prefer to describe a task and review the diff afterwards.
How each one meters
| Cursor (current plans) | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest paid plan | Plus, $8 a month, Grok models only | Pro, $20 a month ($17 on annual billing) |
| Higher tiers | Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200 | Max $100, Ultra $200 |
| Included allowance | One weekly pool for Cursor's own models | Five-hour and weekly limits; verified Ultra accounts have only the weekly one |
| Claude models | Billed at API list price from prepaid credit, Premium and up | Part of the plan |
| After the allowance | Prepaid credit, wait for the reset, or upgrade | Usage credits at API rates, wait, or upgrade |
| Where to look | Editor settings, Usage at grok.com/dashboard | /usage in Claude Code |
Older Cursor plans (Pro at $20, Pro+ at $60, Ultra at $200) still work and keep a monthly allowance for other providers' models. Cursor says moving to the new plans is optional and permanent.
Which one costs less
It depends on the models behind your day.
- Mostly Claude models. In Cursor's current plans every Claude request comes out of prepaid credit from the first one. On a Claude plan the same work counts against limits you already paid for, so Claude Code tends to win.
- Mostly Cursor's own models and completions. The weekly pool covers that, and Plus at $8 is the cheapest paid door into either product.
- Both. Plenty of developers run Claude Code inside Cursor. Anthropic's extension installs in Cursor and bills the Claude plan, not Cursor's pool.
Cursor is still the better pick if you want an editor that predicts your next edit and you are happy with Grok or Composer models. Claude Code adds little for that style of work.
Measure a normal week
A pricing page tells you how the meter works, not what your month will cost. UsageAtlas reads your signed-in Cursor desktop session for plan, Auto + Composer and API usage with the reset date, and it shows Claude Code's five-hour and weekly windows with an estimated cost at list rates. It is free, open source and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux with no account needed for local tracking.
Run both tools as you normally would for a week, then compare. The cost figures are estimates, so confirm anything you plan to buy against the vendor's own billing page.
