FAQ schema for AI search: what Google says and how to generate it

Google says AI Overviews need no special markup, so FAQPage is about accuracy, and a coding agent can build it over MCP.

Does FAQ schema for AI search actually help? Not in the way many AEO checklists suggest: Google says there is no special schema.org markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. FAQPage markup is still worth adding where a page has real questions, as accurate structure for any system that reads it, and the seogeoaeo.ai FAQ Schema Builder can produce it from inside a coding agent.

This piece separates what is documented from what is hoped for, then shows the developer-friendly way to generate the markup.

What Google has said

Three statements from Google Search Central settle most of the debate.

Claim you often see What Google's own pages say
FAQ schema gets you rich results The FAQ rich result stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026
FAQ schema gets you into AI Overviews No additional requirements for AI features, and no special schema.org markup to add
Old FAQ markup now hurts you Unused structured data causes no problems for Search

The first comes from the Search Central documentation updates log, which also records that Google removed the FAQ rich result documentation in June 2026. The second is on Google's page about AI features and your website. The third is from Google's 2023 post that first limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites.

Where FAQ markup can still earn its place

Structured data is a machine-readable summary of the page. FAQPage, per schema.org, says that a page presents frequently asked questions and pairs each Question with an accepted Answer. That is useful context for parsers in general, even when no single search feature promises to display it.

The real AEO work happens in the visible text, because an answer engine can only quote what the page says. A FAQ section that states each answer plainly under its question gives it something to quote, and the markup simply labels that section. Write the section for readers first, then describe it.

What not to do: add questions that are not on the page, or stuff the block with keyword variants. Google's general guidelines say not to mark up content readers cannot see, and a block that drifts from the page is a liability rather than a signal.

Generating it from Claude Code or Cursor

If your FAQ content lives in Markdown or a CMS export, you probably do not want to copy it into a web form. The seogeoaeo.ai FAQ Schema Builder runs over the seogeoaeo.ai MCP server and REST API with a workspace API key, and the published setup covers Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Windsurf and Claude Desktop.

The flow is short:

  1. Ask the agent to collect the FAQ pairs from the page source, one Question | Answer per line.
  2. Have it call the faq-schema-builder tool with that list.
  3. Paste the returned FAQPage JSON-LD into the page template inside a script type="application/ld+json" tag.
  4. After deploy, run the Schema Markup Checker on the live URL to confirm the block parses.

Each builder run is 3 credits, shown before it runs, and the builder fetches nothing; it only uses the text you send. It does not choose a schema type for you or act as Google's Rich Results Test, and its output notes that Google no longer shows FAQ rich results, so nobody on the team ships it with false hopes.

The honest trade-off

For a page with two questions, a coding agent can write valid FAQPage JSON-LD on its own and validator.schema.org will check it for free. The builder is worth the credits when lists are long, when you want the same output every time from an API call, or when you want the validator preview in the same step.

If you are going to add FAQ schema for AI-era search, add it for accuracy rather than as a shortcut, and use seogeoaeo.ai to keep it clean.
