A keyword gap tool your coding agent can call

Inputs, a sample call, and the two request fields that keep an agent from overspending.

If you already let a coding agent do research for you, a keyword gap tool is a natural thing to hand it. The agent asks for the searches a competitor wins that your site misses, gets structured rows back, and can group them, draft briefs or open issues in your content repo. This guide shows how to wire seogeoaeo.ai's Keyword Gap into Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or a plain script, and how to keep the spend predictable.

What the tool returns

Keyword Gap takes three inputs:

Input Required Notes
url Yes Your site, a public http or https address
competitor Yes The rival site
market No One of 20 codes: us, gb, ca, au, ie, in, sg, nz, za, de, fr, es, it, nl, se, pl, br, mx, jp, ae

It looks up the 300 most searched keywords the competitor ranks for and you do not, then drops the ones where the competitor is below position 20 in Google. Each keyword carries an estimated monthly search volume, difficulty, intent and cost per click. The report also flags easy wins, splits out blog topics and terms worth bidding on, and names the competitor pages that win the most gap keywords.

A run costs 85 credits. Plans start at $29 a month for 2,000 credits, and every plan includes REST and MCP access.

Option 1: MCP

The MCP endpoint is https://seogeoaeo.ai/api/mcp, over Streamable HTTP, with your workspace API key as a bearer token. In Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user seogeoaeo https://seogeoaeo.ai/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

Each tool appears under its slug, so the agent sees a keyword-gap tool. Free helper tools include check-credits and get-run, which let the agent check the balance before it starts and fetch a finished run later.

Option 2: REST

For a script or CI job, post to the run endpoint:

curl -X POST https://seogeoaeo.ai/api/v1/tools/keyword-gap/runs \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SEOGEOAEO_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"input":{"url":"https://example.com","competitor":"https://rival.example","market":"gb"},"maxCredits":85,"idempotencyKey":"gap-rival-2026-q4"}'

Agent and API runs cost the same as runs in the browser.

Keeping an agent's spend in check

Two request fields matter when software, not a person, presses the button.

  • maxCredits makes the server refuse any run priced above the number you give. Set it to 85 for this tool and a misrouted call to a pricier tool fails instead of charging.
  • idempotencyKey lets the agent retry after a timeout without paying twice. Derive it from the inputs and the period, for example rival plus quarter, so a retried request carries the same key.

Billing rules worth putting in the agent's instructions: a run that fails on the platform side is refunded; a lookup where the data provider has no record of the pair is refunded; a lookup that compares both sites and finds no gap is still charged.

What to ask the agent to do with the rows

Gap rows are raw material. A short prompt that works well:

  1. Drop any keyword containing the competitor's brand.
  2. Group the rest by the competitor URL that ranks.
  3. For each group, list the main keyword and up to ten related ones, sorted by volume.
  4. Check the repo's content folder for an existing page on each topic and move matches to a separate "improve" list.
  5. Write one brief stub per remaining group.

Step 4 is the one people forget. If you already have a page on the topic, a new page would compete with it. That keyword is not missing, it is weak.

Where the agent still needs a person

The tool covers the missing set for one competitor per call. It does not return keywords where you both rank and you trail, does not see your Search Console data, and does not list keywords a rival bids on in Google Ads. Volumes and difficulty are estimates. Intent fit, whether the results page favors a guide or a calculator, and what your page will add that the rival's lacks are judgment calls a person should make after reading the rival page.

If you need multi-competitor comparison or the weak set in one call, Semrush's Keyword Gap compares up to five domains, and Semrush lists MCP access on its $199 Starter plan. For a single rival per call at a known price, seogeoaeo.ai's agent setup is the shorter path.
