Developers who want a social listening tool with API access usually have a narrow goal. They want brand or product mentions to arrive in their own code, as structured events, so they can post them to an internal channel, open a ticket or feed a model. Brandwatch can do a great deal, but reaching it means a demo and an enterprise contract. This comparison looks at the alternatives from the integration side: what the API does, how events arrive and what access costs.
What to look for before you wire anything up
A listening API is only useful if three things are true:
- You can manage watches in code. Creating and deleting topics through the API means your own app can add a watch when a customer signs up or a new product ships.
- New results are pushed, not polled. Webhooks save you a cron job and a pile of rate-limit handling.
- Payloads are signed. If a webhook can trigger something in your system, you need to verify that it came from the vendor.
How the options compare
Prices below are from each vendor's pricing page, checked in October 2026.
| Tool | API access | Push to your code | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|
| AyeWatch | REST API on every paid plan | HMAC-SHA256 signed webhooks | $9/mo (Pro) |
| Awario | API on all plans | Not covered here | $29/mo billed annually |
| Brand24 | API at an extra $149 | Not covered here | $199/mo billed annually |
| YouScan | API access on Unlimited plans | Slack, Teams or WhatsApp on Starter | $499/mo billed annually, Starter |
| Brandwatch | Sales-led | Sales-led | No public price |
AyeWatch: the API is part of the $9 plan
AyeWatch's REST API lets you create, list, update and delete topics from code. When a topic finds something new, it sends a topic.update webhook event that carries an AI-written summary, signed with HMAC-SHA256 so your handler can check the signature before acting. The API and webhooks come with every paid plan, starting at $9 a month.
Two details matter for developers:
- Rules are written in plain English. Instead of maintaining a Boolean query string per topic, your code sends a sentence such as "outage reports or error complaints about the Stripe integration of OurApp on X and Reddit; ignore marketing posts". The matching is semantic, so a rename or a typo in a post does not need a new query.
- Sources go beyond social. One API covers internet topics across news, blogs and forums, specific web pages such as a vendor's status or changelog page, and X, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok.
The bigger reason to prefer it over a raw mention feed is what arrives. Because the AI has already judged whether each item matches the meaning of the rule, your handler does less filtering, and each event carries a summary it can post as it is.
Awario: the cheapest raw mention feed
Awario lists API access on every plan, from Starter at $29 a month billed annually ($49 monthly). Starter covers three topics, unlimited keywords per topic and 30,000 new mentions a month for one user. You get mentions found by Boolean search, so filtering for meaning is your job.
Brand24: API as an add-on
Brand24's API costs an extra $149 on top of a plan that starts at $199 a month billed annually.
YouScan: strong on images, API on the big plans
YouScan's Starter plan is $499 a month billed annually and includes one Slack, Teams or WhatsApp integration. API access appears on its Unlimited plans, which also add logo recognition in images.
When Brandwatch is still the right backend
If your project needs historical data, such as training a classifier on years of consumer posts, Brandwatch Consumer Research keeps an archive back to 2008 and lets you upload your own enterprise data alongside it. AyeWatch only reports new items and has no archive to query.
Moving a Brandwatch integration over
Take each saved Brandwatch query and rewrite it as one sentence that says what to catch and what to skip. Create the topics through the REST API, point the topic.update webhook at a staging endpoint, check the signatures, and only then switch production traffic. Expect no backfill: the new feed starts from the day each topic is created.
Recommendation
For pushing fresh, filtered mentions into Slack, a queue or an LLM pipeline, AyeWatch gives you managed topics, signed webhooks and summaries in the cheapest paid plan on this list. Read the AyeWatch versus Brandwatch breakdown for the feature table, or try the rules in the Free Preview first and move to Pro when you are ready to point a webhook at a test endpoint.
