Quick answer
With an API key, every token is billed at list price and there are no five-hour or weekly limits. With Pro or Max you pay a flat fee for an allowance that resets. Price a normal month of your tokens at API rates. If that beats the plan price, the plan is cheaper.
API key vs plan
| API key | Pro or Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing | Per token at list price | Flat monthly fee |
| Usage limits | Rate limits only | Five-hour and weekly limits |
| Past the allowance | Keep paying per token | Wait, or pay with usage credits |
| Cost in /usage | Close to your bill | An estimate only |
Price your own usage
UsageAtlas estimates the API cost of your Claude Code tokens per model. Look at a typical week and multiply by four. Compare that with $20, $100, or $200. Light users often come out ahead on the API, and daily heavy users almost never do.
Mixing both
Many people keep a plan for daily work and use usage credits for the occasional overflow. That keeps the flat price without hard stops on a deadline day.
Questions, answered
Is the Claude API cheaper than Max for Claude Code?
For light use, often. For heavy daily use, the plan usually wins. Your own token history decides.
Does an API key have a weekly limit?
No. API usage has rate limits, but no five-hour or weekly allowance to wait for.
Can I switch between an API key and a subscription?
Yes. Claude Code uses whichever you log in with, and /status shows which account is active.
