Quick answer
Max is worth it if Pro's limits stop you most weeks and your time is worth more than the extra $80 or $180 a month. If Pro runs out only now and then, usage credits cost less. Track a few normal weeks before you decide.
Signs you need Max
- You hit the weekly limit before it resets in most weeks.
- The five-hour window stops you several times a day.
- You want Fable models without paying per use. Max can spend up to half its weekly limits on them.
- You already spend more than $80 a month on usage credits.
Signs you do not
- Limit hits are rare, or cluster on one or two heavy days a month.
- Most of your work is short edits and questions.
- You could move overflow to Codex or another tool you already pay for.
Measure it
Set alerts in UsageAtlas at 20% left on both Claude windows and count how often they fire. Then check the estimated API cost of a heavy week. If both numbers are high, Max pays for itself.
Questions, answered
Should I pick Max 5x or Max 20x?
Start with Max 5x. Move to 20x only if 5x still stops you most weeks.
Is Max cheaper than the API for Claude Code?
For heavy daily use, usually. Price a normal week of your tokens at API rates and compare.
Do I lose my usage history if I change plans?
No. Your local Claude Code files and UsageAtlas history stay on your computer whatever plan you are on.
