Quick answer
In current Claude Code, /cost and /stats are aliases of /usage. The screen shows the session's estimated cost, your plan's usage bars, and activity stats. /stats opens on the Stats tab.
What /usage shows
- A session block with cost worked out locally at list prices.
- Plan usage bars if you are on Pro, Max, or Team.
- A breakdown by skills, subagents, plugins, and MCP servers, with suggestions.
- A toggle between 24 hours and 7 days, on the d and w keys.
Why the cost is an estimate
Claude Code multiplies local token counts by list prices. If you pay per token with an API key, that lands close to your bill. On Pro or Max you pay the plan price, so the number only tells you what the same work would cost on the API.
What it leaves out
It covers this computer only, resets on /clear, and cannot see days Claude Code already deleted. Other ways to check usage fill those gaps.
Questions, answered
Why does /cost open /usage?
Anthropic merged the commands. /cost and /stats are now aliases, so the old commands still work.
Is the /cost number what I pay?
Only if you pay per token with an API key. On Pro or Max it is a list-price estimate, and you pay the plan price.
Why did my session cost go back to zero?
Session totals reset when you run /clear.
