Claude Pro vs Max in November 2026, and where Ultra fits

Max is now one $100 tier with five times Pro's usage, the old Max 20x is called Ultra, and a month of your own usage data settles which one you need.

Claude Pro vs Max comes down to one question: how often does Pro's limit stop your work? As of November 2026, Pro costs $20 a month and Max costs $100 for five times Pro's usage, counted both per five-hour session and per week. If even Max runs out, Anthropic now sells a third tier, Ultra, at $200.

Prices and terms below come from Anthropic's pricing page and its help center, read on November 4, 2026. They exclude tax and can change at Anthropic's discretion.

On every plan, Claude chat, the desktop and mobile apps and Claude Code share one allowance. That covers Claude Code inside VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains IDEs too, so a long research chat in the afternoon leaves less room for coding in the evening.

What changed since October

Older comparisons, including UsageAtlas's own Pro vs Max limits guide from October 26, list two Max tiers: Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200. Anthropic has since renamed Max 20x to Ultra. Subscribers moved over at the same price, but the allowance is now described as 10x Pro per week, with no five-hour cap once the account is verified. Max is now a single $100 plan.

The pricing page also gives the weekly multiplier now, not only the per-session one. It still publishes no absolute numbers, because how far an allowance stretches depends on the model, the length of the conversation, attached files and the effort level.

A simple rule for Claude Code users

  • Stay on Pro if limit messages show up a few times a month. Turn on usage credits for those days. They bill at API rates on top of the subscription, under a monthly cap you set.
  • Move to Max if Pro's weekly limit stops you most weeks, or if you want Fable without paying per request.
  • Pick Ultra if the five-hour window itself is the problem: long agent runs that stall halfway through an afternoon.

Upgrades apply at once and unused time is credited, so a month on Max is easy to try. Downgrades take effect when the billing period ends.

Two things Max does not change

The $100 of monthly API credits on Max is for building on the Claude Platform. Anthropic's help center says it does not pay for interactive Claude Code or for usage credits. And if ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in your shell, Claude Code bills that key per token whatever plan you hold.

Measure your week before you upgrade

Anthropic gives you two live views: Settings > Usage on claude.ai, and /usage in Claude Code. Both show where you stand right now. Neither keeps a record of how many weeks ran hot.

UsageAtlas does. It is a free, open-source desktop tracker for Windows, macOS and Linux that shows Claude's five-hour and weekly windows with their reset times, plus tokens, models and an estimated cost from your local Claude Code activity. Pick an alert threshold for each window and it sends one desktop notice per reset cycle, so a month of alerts shows how often Pro gets close. It needs no account for local tracking and never reads prompts or responses. Its cost figures are estimates, and Anthropic's bill stays the record.

If the alerts fire most weeks, Max is likely the better buy. If they fire on a couple of heavy days, Pro plus usage credits costs less.

When another option fits better

If you code in bursts with long quiet stretches, a pay-as-you-go Console account can cost less than any subscription. Set a workspace spend limit before you start.
