Claude "Reset for free": how limit resets work

Anthropic sometimes offers a free reset of your Claude five-hour or weekly limit in Settings > Usage. Where to find it, and why you will not see it in Claude Code.

Quick answer

Anthropic sometimes gives eligible plans a "Reset for free" button in Settings > Usage, on the web or in Claude Desktop. Depending on the offer, it restores your five-hour limit or your weekly limit. Claude Code in the terminal or IDE cannot show it, so check the web app when you are stuck.

Where to find it

Open Settings > Usage on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop. If a reset is on offer, the button sits next to the limit it restores. Anthropic's limit reset article lists which plans qualify.

When resets happen

Not on a schedule. Anthropic gave Pro, Max, and Team a free reset when Opus 5.5 launched on September 22, 2026. Treat them as a bonus, not something to plan around.

If no reset is offered

Wait for the normal reset, turn on usage credits, or switch tools. UsageAtlas shows when each window resets, and the limit reached guide covers each option.

Questions, answered

Why don't I see the Reset for free button?

It only appears when Anthropic offers a reset to your plan, and only on the web or in Claude Desktop.

Can I reset my Claude limit from Claude Code?

No. The button is not available in the terminal or IDE. Open Settings > Usage on claude.ai.

Does a free reset restore both limits?

Not always. Each offer restores either the five-hour limit or the weekly limit.
