Claude Code

Claude 5-hour session limit vs weekly limit, explained

Claude Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, shared by Claude Code and the Claude apps. How they interact and which one you will hit first.

Quick answer

The session limit caps how much you can use in a five-hour window. The weekly limit caps your total for the week. Both run at once, both cover Claude Code and the Claude apps, and whichever runs out first stops you.

How the two limits work together

Every request counts toward both. A long burst of work tends to hit the session limit, and steady use every day tends to hit the weekly one. The session limit resets every five hours. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time for your account.

Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable models. How fast you use any of them depends on the model and the effort level, per Anthropic's plan guide.

What changed in 2026

  • May 6. Anthropic doubled Claude Code's five-hour limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise, and dropped the weekday peak-hour reduction for Claude Code on Pro and Max.
  • September 14. Weekly limits got a permanent 25% increase, replacing a temporary 50% boost.
  • September 22. Five-hour limits rose another 20% with the Opus 5.5 launch.

Watch both at once

UsageAtlas shows both windows as percentages with reset times, and each can have its own alert. That way the weekly limit does not surprise you on a Thursday.

Questions, answered

Why do I hit the session limit on Pro so fast?

Usage depends on the model and the effort level. Opus and high effort drain the window faster, and long sessions resend a lot of context with each request.

Does the weekly limit reset when the session limit does?

No. They reset on separate schedules.

Do Pro and Max both have a weekly limit?

Yes. Both have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable models.
